In May 2026, the Australian federal government announced in its latest budget an upgrade of net overseas migration by 55,000 over the next two years. According to updated forecasts, Australia is expected to welcome nearly 1 million net migrants over four years — approximately 305,000 in 2024-25 and 295,000 in 2025-26.

Treasurer Jim Chalmers noted the increase reflects more temporary visa holders staying longer rather than a surge in new arrivals. Importantly, the government announced it will prioritise migrants already in Australia for permanent migration places — great news for those on 485 Graduate visas, 482 Employer Sponsored visas, or other temporary visas.
